Project 3

Wildfire Preparation in Hispanic Communities living in WUI’s

As urban regions expand, populations are living closer and closer to wildland, where they are vulnerable to wildfires.

These zones are called WUIs, or “Wildland-Urban Interfaces”. Latinx and Hispanic populations are among the most vulnerable in WUIs.

In this project, we partnered with the Texas A&M Forest Service, Howard University, Texas Tech University and broadcast meteorologist serving the Latinx community to create culturally-relevant communication products for wildfire preparation in WUIs.

You can find the survey we used to understand the vulnerability of the community in DesignSafe:

I am part of the RED (Risk and Education in Disasters) Lab, a project led by Dr. Jen Henderson dedicated to document and understand how the resources, personal histories, social infrastructures, and ethical frameworks constrain the ability of people to act in the world and respond during disasters.

Here are other projects we have worked on:

  • Urban Social and Environmental Hazards: A Qualitative Mapping Strategy for Students from Disadvantaged Communities.

Stay tuned for for our upcoming publication.

  • Characterizing Spanish-Speaking Broadcast Meteorologists’ Challenges Communicating Multiple Hazards in Landfalling Tropical Cyclones

Stay tuned for the third phase of this project.

And all our resources and communication products (Videos, infographics, comics, presentations, etc.) can be found in:

Our upcoming publication in the Natural Hazards Center.

Biofuels Saving the Day

I volunteer in the Advanced BioFuels USA, a non-profit organization dedicated to educate about biofuels and their benefits to society.

We make engaging presentations, animations, videos, and we are even working on an animated video series!

Advances BioFuels USA is a great, well-organized resource to consult information about biofuels, from the most basic science behind them to the most recent news on the topic.
